Youth and Young Adult Ministries
The Youth and Young Adult Ministry office seeks to draw youth and young adults into the life, mission and work of the Catholic Church. It provides opportunities for social gatherings, leadership development, liturgical celebrations, service and catechetical training.
I invite you to read the following account from a young person who spent time with our youth program in June, 2005:
Hello, my name is Tim and I'm a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima in Layton. I'm 16 years old and I went on my first Youth Ministry trip in June.
I read about the trip in our parish bulletin. It said the Office of Youth Ministry would be taking a summer trip, and it was an opportunity for service and community. I was interested in going, but since I didn't know anyone I was afraid I would be bored or lonely. I decided to go on the trip. Mary Fasig, the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry was there and other people from St. Ambrose and St. Martin de Porres. My mind was changed the first night when we played a game of spoons. I had never played the game before, but I had lots of fun, and I began to feel comfortable with the group.
Our first stop was at St. John Bosco in Delta. In the morning we prayed the Rosary with parishioners Eileen and Howard. (Every parish should have “an Eileen and Howard.”) I got to lead the second mystery (The Ascension). It was fun, except I think I added an extra Hail Mary. After the Rosary we went to a communion service. The Gospel said, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.” I thought that was very fitting for Delta because they had no priest. It seemed very hard to be a Catholic in Delta. People here don't go to Mass because they don't like their priest, people in Delta don't go to Mass because they have no priest. I take a lot of things for granted.
We weeded the side of the church and planted flowers. We worked hard, and it looked so much better than before! It wasn't all work though. The parish had a barbecue and we played games with the kids. All of us had so much fun! The people were very nice.
We went to Holy Family Mission in Fillmore and planted flowers there too. It's a new church and there weren't any flowers or bushes, just dirt. I hope the people of Holy Family Mission will enjoy the flowers.
After Delta and Fillmore we headed for St. Christopher's in Kanab. In the morning we went to a communion service celebrated by a woman named Candy. She is an awesome lady. She is so wise and spiritual. She reminded me of Solomon. She taught me how to trust in the Lord. Every time she told a story she said something like, “The Lord wanted me to,” or “I asked the Lord what he wanted me to do.” Her Homily was so good. We should all try to be more like her.
In Kanab we weeded the garden that has a statue of Our Lady. And we also weeded the area where a cross is named after Father Hart. It looks very clean now. We had a potluck with the parishioners. The people there were really good to us.
This trip was planned to help these communities. We improved and changed gardens at missions and parishes. But, I feel like I changed. The trip was fun and a great experience. I met great people and learned many things.
